Product Description:
This item is handmade in Colorado out of 12 gauge steel plate. This dragonfly is about 12 inches wide and the rod is 36" long. All you have to do is push the steel rod into the ground. The part that goes into the ground will likely rust even if the following recommendation is followed, and that is Ok.
We recommend Renaissance Wax for protecting all our raw metal products indoors and outdoors. This wax was designed by UK museums to protect many of their items, and it is known to enhance the appearance of the item. It is extremely easy to apply. Simply wipe it on with a cloth. In 15 minutes it will cure into an invisible, hard protective layer. The surface should then be gently buffed with a clean, dry cloth (not the cloth the wax was applied with). Allow 60 minutes between coats for proper curing. Apply multiple coats for enhanced durability. Some level of corrosion may still be experienced.
If the coats are not thin enough and/or the excess is not gently buffed off after each coat, then this can cause a black residue to be left on things that come in contact with the surface. When used outdoors, this wax is typically applied 1-2 times per year, depending on climate and handling. The steel may patina over time, and that is completely normal. However, the steel may rust if Renaissance Wax is not applied periodically. Rusty steel is very popular outdoors in many regions, since it takes a very long time for rust to cause structural failure on thick steel in mild to moderately humid environments. A rusty surface is not always desireable for sitting or touching though.
If your soil is very corrosive or you just want this item to last a very long time, then the part that goes into the ground can be wrapped with Denso tape and then buried, instead of shoved into the ground. This tape is designed to protect underground pipes from corrosion.
